The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by any external party. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, NATO expanded east, bringing some degree of tension with the Russian Federation.

During the events of Homefront, NATO was disbanded shortly after the collapse of the global financial markets. In Homefront: The Revolution's timeline, NATO continued to survive, albeit in a reduced capacity as KPA forces invaded the United States.

Homefront timeline[]

Following the United States' withdrawal from both Iraq and South Korea, NATO forces presumably withdrew its forces from the Middle East. Following the outbreak of the Oil Wars in the Middle East, NATO state members were deeply impacted by the conflict's devastation on the region's major oil producing nations, in which many began pulling out of the organization, seeking to alleviate domestic unrest. By the early-2020s, NATO was dissolved.

Despite NATO's dissolution, its former European members began planning military support to the United States against the Greater Korean Republic following the American counteroffensive in San Francisco in 2027.

Homefront: The Revolution timeline[]

When the United States fell to KPA occupation in 2025, NATO remained neutral and unwilling to assist the U.S. NATO continued its neutrality to North Korea until in 2029, the KPA began shifting its focus towards Europe.[1]

Fearing a major invasion, NATO began mobilizing a massive invasion force to launch a first strike against the KPA in occupied America. Seeking to eliminate the APEX satellite network to prevent the KPA from annihilating the NATO invasion force, NATO was unable to utilize its own ICBMs to destroy the APEX network, for fear of a nuclear retaliation. Instead, NATO deployed a covert team into KPA-occupied America to launch an American ICBM against the satellite network.[2] NATO's plans succeeded with help from the American Resistance and NATO forces begin their campaign against the KPA.[3]
