"The Resistance is attempting to contact cells beyond the Montrose area. It's hard to determine what's happening outside the Wall, but our KPA sources report that several patrols have gone missing, and the ones that survived have nothing but horror stores. After the EMP went off and the electronic grid that sustained us broke apart, our nation fell into a kind of madness. I remember that first winter- desperation sweeping the country. People turned on each other, and worse, as food grew scarce. Many beyond the Wall have no allegiance to any cause, other than their own survival. If you must deal with them, be advised that they can be unpredictable, and a fair number are outright insane. Let's be careful out there. This is the Voice of Freedom."
―The Voice of Freedom

"Heartland" is the fifth chapter in Homefront.

Description[]

After escaping Colorado, the squad finds itself in no man's land. They will have to bargain for the last piece of Boone's plan, a helicopter, with a gang of American survivalists. Stories of their paranoia and savagery are the stuff of nightmares.

Plot[]

Connor, Rianna, Jacobs and Hopper reached the survivalist settlement. Conner tells Hopper to stay back as the survivalists are not "Korean friendly." They meet the survivalists' leader, "The Captain", and inform him about Boone's demise. Upon learning this, The Captain reneged on their deal with the Resistance. Rianna protests and prompting one of the survivalists to hold her hostage. Connor tries to calm the situation by reminding them that "they're fighting the same war." However, they ignored his reason and The Captain gives the Resistance a new deal: handing over Rianna and Hopper to them and in return Connor and Jacobs walk away alive. The Resistance refuses in which Rianna breaks free and she and Connor quickly dispatch The Captain and his men.

After killing the remaining survivalists at the settlement's entrance, the Resistance infiltrate the settlement and make their way to the helicopter. On their way towards the chopper they sneak pass various survivalists committing inhumane acts towards KPA prisoners such as treated them as slave labor to power a generator, lynching them from a bridge, and forcing a prisoner to digging his own grave.

They see a KPA Black Hawk being blasted out of the sky by survivalists with RPGs. The group makes their way to the crashed helicopter when they hear gunfire from ahead. They decide to forgo stealth and attack the survivalists and the Koreans that survived the crash. They soon fight their way to a church and find the helicopter inside a well-guarded compound. Jacobs climbs up the church's bell tower to provide overwatch for the others. Connor, Hopper and Riana commandeered a truck and ram into the compound. The survivalists fires a rocket at the church tower and forcing Jacobs jump out of the burning building. Jacobs regroup with the Resistance and escape on the helicopter.

Trivia[]

  • Two survivalists are toying with a captive KPA soldier by shooting at his feet and making him dance. This bears similarity to a scene from the 1986 film Platoon.
  • When a survivalist rushes the player to use a melee attack, the game uses the same sound clips as if it was a Korean soldier.
  • If the player shoots the sentry who they are supposed to melee, the melee sound clip is used anyway.
