"I'm an American, I was born in Oakland, asshole."
―Hopper retorting to a anti-Korean prisoner.

Hopper Lee is a Korean-American and a member of the Resistance in Homefront. He is an expert in mostly car mechanics. Hopper bears scars dealt to him during the race riots of the early parts of America's occupation. Hopper's Korean heritage helps the Resistance greatly though this also means he is often a target for racist hostility and suspicion.

History[]

Background[]

Hopper was born in 1995, and was a third generation Korean-American; his grandparents fled North Korea in the mid-1960s.[3] During his youth Hopper was told stories by his grandparents of the oppression they lived in North Korea. At some point he and his family moved to Oakland, California. Hopper became a very skilled technician and had won several rewards at events such as the DARPA Grand Challenge.

During the early days of the Korean Occupation, Hopper faced hostile racial prejudice from other American citizens. Consequently, a mob burned down Hopper's home and Hopper's was badly scarred from the Oakland Race Riots.[1]

Joining the Resistance[]

Following the Korean invasion, Hopper was forcibly recruited by the KPA to repair military equipment under pain of death. Consequently, he was branded as a collaborator. During that time he joined a local resistance cell, passing intel to them. However, he still suffered prejudice among his peers in which he was given suicide missions.[4]

While repairing electronics for the Koreans, he reconfigured the unmanned armed ground vehicle Goliath and built a controller so that it would be under his direct control. After fixing Goliath for two months, he escaped with the Goliath and eventually making his journey to join the Montrose resistance cell.

Along the way, Hopper joined Nguyen Huu Giap's resistance cell in Bryce Canyon that encountered Ben Walker's group. He strike up a quick friendship with Kelsie Wilcox over their common interest in technology. Hopper also clearly stated to Ben that he was against the Korean government under Kim Jong-un, and criticized the Korean leadership for shaming his people and heritage.[5] Hopper and the Bryce Canyon cell traveled to Montrose and joined the local cell led by Boone Karlson.

Recruiting Robert Jacobs[]

Hopper helped the Resistance in saving and recruiting Robert Jacobs. He provided Jacobs Goliath's Targerter to control the combat drone against heavy KPA forces, and instructed Jacobs in learning how to use the drone. After fighting off the KPA, Hopper and the others escaped to the Oasis.

Retrieving the Beacons[]

Thereafter, Hopper joined Jacobs and Connor to infiltrate the Montrose labor camp in procuring tracking beacons. There, the camp's prisoners displayed overt hostility towards Hopper's ethnicity in which he tried to makes it clear that he is an American who fighting to free his country from the GKR.

Although they were betrayed by their "inside man" Arnie, they managed to kill Arnie and fought their way to acquire the beacons. While attempting to escape they came upon a mass grave in the school's baseball field. Hopper and the two men present were left disgusted by the discovery, and were then forced to hide in the grave when more KPA forces arrive.

Hopper participated in assaulting an occupied discount warehouse store where the fuel trucks were located. During the attack, Hopper accidentally misfired white phosphorus round which killed both Resistance fighters and KPA soldiers. Despite the losses, they succeeded in placing the tracking beacons on the fuel trucks.

Upon returning to the Oasis, they discovered to their horror the sanctuary had been discovered by the KPA, who then killed all the residents including Boone in retaliation for the raid the night before. The group fought their way out of Montrose to continue their mission in capturing the fuel trucks. Hopper reluctantly used his Goliath as a vehicle bomb to breach through the city's wall.

Capturing the Fuel Trucks[]

Hopper and the others traveled to a survivalist encampment in Utah where Boone had made a deal with the survivalists in providing them a helicopter. However, the survivalists reneged on their deal and demanded the Resistance into giving them Hopper and Rianna. Hopper and the others fought through the encampment and stealing the helicopter. They pursued and successfully hijacked the fuel trucks, and traveled to San Francisco.

San Francisco[]

After delivering the fuel to the U.S. military, Hopper and the Resistance participated in the attack on San Francisco and helping American forces across the Golden Gate Bridge. Hopper contributed his skills in capturing and reprogramming KPA ground-based air defenses and securing air superiority for the U.S. Air Force.

Personality[]

Like Rianna, he offers a civilian perspective on combat, expressing concern for fellow combatants, the repercussions of their actions and occasionally showing stress under fire. He is serves as a counter-balance to the gung-ho attitude of combat veteran Connor. Throughout certain missions, such as Heartland, Hopper makes references to his background, commenting on his unease being at the survivalist camp and their treatment of KPA prisoners as it reminded him of the racial violence he had experienced in Oakland.

Quotes[]

Homefront: The Voice of Freedom[]

"Look, Ben, despite what happened in the race riots, no one is more patriotic than me. I'm not anti-Korean, but you better believe I'm anti-Korean government. What Kim Jong-un has done is despicable. He's no better than Hitler. He has shamed our people and my heritage. I would like nothing more than to go over to Pyongyang and kick his little butt. Well, I'd let Goliath do it."

Trivia[]

  • Hopper is notable for being the only known Asian member of the Resistance, leading to racist hostility and suspicion from strangers.
  • He is the tech specialist of the Resistance cell in Montrose, Colorado. He displays his skills prominently towards two separate achievements in-game: his previous successful hacking and commandeering of a Goliath drone, and the later capture of two hostile AA guns for use against the KPA, an essential part of the San Francisco campaign and the last level of Homefront.
  • Hopper is modeled on actor Trevor Zhou.
  • It is odd, as even though Hopper took control of and used Goliath, he gives the controls to Jacobs and doesn't use it again. Also, despite having given the Goliath controller to Jacobs in the second chapter of the Campaign, he still carries another controller tied to the bag he carries, seemingly.
