"My fellow Americans, we are in a state of crisis and your government is fully aware of it and acting upon it. You should know that the vice president, the Cabinet, and I are safe. I cannot reveal the location for obvious reasons, nor can I confirm or deny that we are on U.S. soil. Nevertheless, I want to assure you that we are doing everything within our power to alleviate our situation. I have received official communications from our European allies, and they have all pledged to come to our aid. Unfortunately, due to economic factors that have affected the entire globe, it’s going to take some time before this occurs. I cannot estimate what the time frame will be."
―The U.S. President addressing the occupation zone in Homefront: The Voice of Freedom, around May 2025.

The European Union is an economic and political coalition of 28 democratic member states located in Europe.

Homefront timeline[]

Europe has long maintained close military and economic ties with the United States, providing tremendous aid and support to the American-led conflicts in the Middle East. After the reunification of Korea into the Greater Korean Republic, Europe's influence and global economic status gradually declined due to global economic turmoil.

In August 2015, Russia and Ukraine, two nations outside of the European Union, signed a "mutual interest pact" and cutting off all oil and natural gas trade with Western Europe, which American commentaries claimed will have brutal effects on Western Europe when winter comes.[1]

With the increasingly powerlessness of the United Nations against the Greater Korean Republic's harsh actions in East Asia and the apparent dissolution of NATO due to the crash of the American dollar, the European Union manages to survive but inevitably continues its steady decline alongside the U.S. and China.

Following the Korean invasion and occupation of the Western United States, the U.S. President had claimed that America's European allies will pledged their support against the GKR. But due to the global economic conditions, the E.U. were not able to provide immediate aid to the U.S.[2]

In 2027, the U.S. military dealt a significant blow against the Korean occupation during their counterattack on San Francisco, and prompting the E.U. Defense Council to finally call an emergency session to consider honoring its long-standing alliance with America once more against the GKR.

Behind the scenes[]

  • While the release version of Homefront: The Revolution contains scant mentions of the EU, the early prototype would have expanded greatly on the EU by way of Subin Kang and her news reports. EU would have been in a state of constant crisis (or at least portrayed as such in public broadcasts), with wars raging in Greece and Spain, an invasion of Egypt to depose a Korean-aligned government, widespread famine and explicitly fascist governments in nearly a half of the member states:
    • "For the 7th consecutive quarter, industrial output has shrunk in the EU, as the continent struggles to recuperate from the economic conflicts that have plagued it since the collapse and realignment of the Euro. Car and consumer goods manufacturers have been especially hard-hit, as domestic demand has dried up and superior Asian products have dominated market share in emerging economies. Lukas Schuster, president of the EU, was keen to place the blame on extraordinary macro-economic conditions such as the inflationary pressure on the price of Middle Eastern Oil, and the cost of wars in Greece and Spain. Other commentators point to the long-term trends in what some are calling the last death throes of the capitalist system. With people starving in the major European capitals, and fascism having gained a solid electoral foothold in nearly half the member states, the EU's grasp of its dominion is looking increasingly weak."
    • "EU forces took heavy casualties yesterday, as the conflict in Egypt threatened to balloon out of control. The imperialist battalions engaged in fierce house-to-house fighting with freedom fighters in the northern suburbs of Cairo, but were unable to penetrate their positions. The EU troops are attempting to re-establish a sympathetic political power-base in Egypt, after democratic elections sought to replace the EU-backed puppet administration with a worker-led coalition. We must support the struggle of the workers against the toxic spread of capitalist ideology. Let us hope that the Egyptians too can find inspiration from our own Supreme Leader, who has devoted his life to resisting the capitalist threat to social and economic well-being, for the benefit of his people."
  • The idea of a European invasion to liberate the United States that would be retained for The Revolution and its DLC was already present at this point.
